assessment services

We offer assessments for children and adolescents from kindergarten to Grade 12, as well as for young adults up to 24-years of age. Assessments are tailored to provide a deeper understanding of cognitive, academic, social, emotional, behavioural, and/or adaptive functioning.  All of our assessments are overseen by doctoral level registered clinical psychologists with extensive education and training in assessment and clinical diagnosis.  We offer comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations as well as more targeted diagnostic or giftedness assessments.

educational assessment

An educational, psychoeducational, or "psych-ed" assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of your child's cognitive abilities, executive functioning, academic skills, and social, emotional, behavioural, and adaptive functioning. A psychoeducational assessment can clarify whether giftedness, a learning disorder (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia), intellectual disability, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or other social, emotional, or behavioural concern may be impacting your child's functioning.  We charge a flat rate of $3120 for psychoeducational assessments, with an additional fee for classroom observations when needed. Please note that there is often a wait list for psychoeducational assessments. Once started, the entire process requires 4 to 6 weeks, on average, to complete.

giftedness assessment

An IQ score at or above the 98th percentile is required for admission to Westmount Charter School and the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program offered by the Calgary Board of Education. While a psychoeducational assessment also provides an IQ score, some children do not require such a comprehensive evaluation. If you are unsure whether a psychoeducational or giftedness assessment is most appropriate, reach out and we would be happy to help determine the best course of action. Once your child's IQ score has been calculated, next steps may include: provision of a summary letter, report, and/or additional academic testing. Gifted assessments start at $1200.

diagnostic assessment

When it comes to therapy, our work is guided by your needs, strengths, and goals and you don't need to have a clinical diagnosis or have had an assessment to start therapy. However, a psychodiagnostic assessment may be indicated when a clearer understanding of your child/adolescent's emotional, behavioural, or mental health concerns is needed to guide medication decisions or to access specific resources or accommodations. A psychodiagnostic assessment can answer questions such as, "Is this typical teenage moodiness, or is it depression?" or "Does my child have OCD?". Psychodiagnostic assessments are billed on an hourly basis, which includes time spent meeting with you and/or your child/adolescent, completing standardized questionnaires, and providing a diagnostic letter and feedback. Please note that we usually recommend a complete psychoeducational assessment when there are questions around ADHD unless your child/adolescent has undergone one previously.
